Traveling with kids is a logistics game, and Waterford makes it an easy one. You're within a short drive of some of the region's best family attractions, with a lake and a backyard full of activities waiting for you at the end of every day. Here are the dependable wins.
Animals and big-ticket fun
The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak is the headliner — one of the country's top zoos, with enough shade, snacks, and stroller-friendly paths to fill a happy morning. Closer to home, Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills hides two more crowd-pleasers under one roof: a SEA LIFE aquarium and a LEGOLAND Discovery Center, both perfect rainy-day insurance.

A little culture (painlessly)
The Detroit Institute of Arts is more kid-friendly than parents expect — the giant Diego Rivera murals are a genuine 'whoa' moment, and the galleries are easy to do in bite-sized loops. Pair it with a snack downtown and you've got a low-effort culture hit that everyone remembers.

Best of all: the lake
The cheapest, easiest day is also the one kids love most. The public beach at Dodge #4 State Park is about a mile away, and the lake is right across the street for swimming and splashing. End the day with a backyard movie under the projector and a soak in the hot tub for the grown-ups — everybody wins.
