Some destinations make you plan every minute. Oakland County's lake country isn't one of them. Set up a base in Waterford and a great weekend mostly assembles itself: a morning on the water, a long lunch, an afternoon outside, a dinner you'll talk about on the drive home. Here's how we'd spend a no-stress 48 hours.

Friday: arrive and slow down

Roll in, drop your bags, and resist the urge to do anything ambitious. Cass Lake is one of the largest all-sports lakes in the region, and the public beach at Dodge #4 State Park is about a mile away — a perfect first stop to shake off the drive. As the light goes gold, fire up a wood-fired pizza at home or grab a casual bite lakeside in nearby Keego Harbor.

Saturday: on the water, then into Clarkston

Mornings are for the lake. Swim, paddle, or take a boat out and explore the connected chain of lakes — the water is the main event, and it's right across the street. When you're ready for a change of scenery, historic downtown Clarkston is about fifteen minutes away and packs the area's best cluster of restaurants into a few walkable blocks.

The trick to a great lake weekend is doing less, better. One lake, one good dinner, one early night.

For dinner, the wood-fired BBQ at Union Woodshop and the comfort food at Clarkston Union are local institutions for a reason; Honcho is the move if you're craving tacos and a good cocktail. Weekends get busy, so go early or plan to wait with a drink.

Sunday: one easy adventure

Save your one 'big' outing for Sunday, when the morning is calm and the roads are quiet. Birmingham's walkable downtown is about twenty minutes south for brunch and a stroll; Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills is close if the weather turns; and downtown Detroit's museums and markets are a straight shot down I-75 in roughly forty minutes if you want a bigger day.

Then head back for one last lake hour before you pack up. That's the rhythm of a Waterford weekend: close to the water, close to the city, and never in a hurry.
