Pine Knob Music Theatre — long known to locals by its DTE Energy era name — is one of the country's busiest outdoor amphitheaters, and it's about twenty minutes from the house in Clarkston. A summer concert here is a quintessential Michigan night out. A little planning makes it a great one.
Lawn or pavilion?
The pavilion is covered and close to the stage — the pick for must-see acts and iffy weather. The lawn is the classic Pine Knob experience: bring a blanket, spread out, and enjoy the relaxed, picnic-on-a-hillside vibe. Neither is wrong; it just depends on the show and your mood.

Timing and tips
- Arrive early — traffic and parking back up close to showtime.
- Check the venue's current bag and seating policies before you go.
- Eat in nearby Clarkston beforehand to skip the concession lines.
- Have a plan for the post-show parking exit; patience is a virtue.
The lawn at sunset, a band you love, and a short drive home to the lake. Hard to beat a Michigan summer night.
The best part: a short drive home
The single biggest upgrade to a concert night is not having a long drive home afterward. From Pine Knob, you're only about twenty minutes back to the house — close enough to wind down in the hot tub instead of fighting freeway traffic for an hour.
